People for A Living Moorabool (PALM) would like to acknowledge and congratulate Barwon Water Managing Director Shaun Cumming for his appearance on Melbourne ABC radio this morning.

ABC BarwonWaterABC Barwon Water Interview

Recognition of the vast reduction of flows into rivers like the Moorabool over the last 20 years was very welcome. Mr Cummings has toured parts of the Moorabool with PALM recently to learn first hand some of the existential threats facing this river.

As mentioned in the interview an extra 3,700ML of water will be left in the river as part of the commitments made in the Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy. Further amounts are earmarked when Geelong moves to manufactured sources of water including recycled and desalination.

Whether this will be enough to secure the future of arguably the most flow stressed river in Victoria remains to be seen. But for community groups such as PALM, to have the support of Barwon Water after so many years of advocacy shows the organisation is listening to the community and their wish that, in the future, the region's rivers are allowed to flow.
